SP 5.09 Improving Uptake in Laparoscopic Surgical Video Recording, Analysis and Annotation in Digital Surgical Technology Research

Introduction
Surgical digital technology, specifically the development of artificial intelligence models, is dependent on high-quality digital data, including laparoscopic surgical video and expert surgical annotations. Surgeons are one of multiple groups of stakeholders in the acquisition of surgical data.
The aim of this qualitative study was to explore surgeons’ opinions of laparoscopic surgical video recording, analysis and annotating for surgical digital technology research using reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) of qualitative focus group data.
Methods
Laparoscopic surgeons were invited to participate in a virtual focus group. Qualitative data was analysed using RTA, an analytical method to develop and interpret patterns in a dataset by a systematic coding.
The focus group considered: uses and benefits, limitations and barriers, and how to improve uptake in recording, analysing and annotating laparoscopic surgical video.
Results
The following themes were developed using RTA. Benefits: encouraging reflection, understanding/preventing complications, Hawthorne effect, mentoring and coaching, increasing trainee autonomy and independence, standardising surgical workflow and patient access to laparoscopic surgical video. Barriers: difficulty recording, storing and accessing video data, annotating laparoscopic surgical video is difficult, could negatively impact surgical training, not accessible to surgical trainees, medicolegal concerns, patient consent and appropriate storage. Improving uptake: Annotation training and support, optimising workflow and educational incentive.
Conclusion
Participants perceive there is merit in recording, analysis and annotation of laparoscopic surgical video. Once the barriers to data acquisition are better understood and overcome, routine recording and analysis may be established creating a greater breadth of data available for surgical digital technology research.
