SP 10.04 Radiology-Driven Prediction of Post-Emergency Appendicectomy Complications: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Background
Appendicoliths and radiological features of complicated appendicitis are known predictors of disease severity. This study evaluates how radiology classification and appendicoliths correlate with postoperative complications in a 334-case cohort.
Methods
Retrospective analysis using radiology-coded uncomplicated vs. complicated appendicitis and scan-reported appendicoliths. Outcomes included postoperative complications. Statistical tests included RR and logistic regression.
Results
Complicated-on-scan cases had a 23.8% complication rate vs. 5.9% when uncomplicated (RR=4.02). Appendicolith presence increased complication risk from 8.4% to 33.3% (RR=3.97). Both remained independent predictors.
Conclusion
Radiology-driven classification and appendicolith presence are strong preoperative predictors of postoperative complications.
