Some of Immune Markers Associated with Prostate Patients

Abstract

Background:

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer (PCa) are a main healthcare issue that could result in death.

Objective:

This study aimed to measure complete blood count (CBC) and concentration markers of total prostate-specific antigen (TPSA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in prostate patients and compare with healthy control.

Materials and Methods:

This study included 125 subjects who were suffering from BPH (45 patients) and PCa (40 patients) after institutional ethical approval, with ages ranging from 39 to 85 years and 40 healthy individuals as control subjects. The samples of whole blood were collected from each participant. The serum CRP level was measured by automated fluorescence immunoassay 6; TPSA level was measured by Enzyme Linked Fluorescent Assay (VIDAS), and significance of difference between various group was compared by using one way analysis of variance analysis.

Results:

The results showing mean levels of neutrophil were 63.93 ± 10.94, 63.25 ± 12.07, and 56.24 ± 8.62, in BPH patients, PCa patients, and control groups, respectively; the mean levels were higher in BPH patients in comparison with other groups and the difference was highly significant ( P < 0.001). In the case of lymphocyte, the mean levels of lymphocyte were 29.00 ± 9.61, 29.83 ± 10.48, and 31.97 ± 5.80, in BPH patients, PCa patients, and control groups, respectively; the mean levels were higher in healthy control groups in comparison with other groups but the difference was non-significant ( P = 0.280). Mean levels of CRP were 18.93 ± 15.95, 60.14 ± 54.55, and 1.62 ± 1.03, in BPH patients, PCa patients, and control groups, respectively; the mean levels were higher in PCa patients in comparison with other groups and the difference was highly significant ( P < 0.001). Regarding TPSA, the mean levels of TPSA were 12.13 ± 5.36, 56.67 ± 35.0, and 0.997 ± 0.491, in BPH patients, PCa patients, and control groups, respectively; the mean levels were higher in PCa patients in comparison with other groups and the difference was highly significant ( P < 0.001).

Conclusion:

According to the findings of the current study, neutrophils, CRP, and TPSA play a role in the diagnosis of prostate disease.
