Socio-Economic research and urban transport in West Germany

The West German socio-economic research in urban transport can be featured as follows: a great variety of the research structures, a power of both pragmatism and Engineers, their focusing on modelization.In this field, the interest of human scientists is reduced to data collecting, the contestation is put into "alternative" projects not yet theorized. The good health of local life (Federalism) and that of urban transport (wide railroad networks) on one hand, the strategies and speculations from the miscellaneous concerned professional groups on the other hand, are the main reasons to this lack of sociological investigation in urban transport.The new economic background and the energy crisis should stir up a demand ready to fill this scientific gap.

Une grande diversité des structures de recherche, la domination des ingénieurs et du pragmatisme, la focalisation sur les travaux de modélisation, telles sont les principales caractéristiques de la recherche socio-économique ouest-allemande en transports urbains.La participation des spécialistes des sciences humaines y est réduite au recueil des données ; la contestation s'y exprime en termes de projets "alternatifs" non théorisés. La bonne santé de la vie locale (fédéralisme) et des transports urbains (réseaux ferrés étendus) d'une part, les stratégies et idéologies des divers groupes professionnels concernés d'autre part, expliquent en grande partie l'absence d'une investigation sociologique des transports urbains. Les crises économique et énergétique devraient susciter une demande apte à combler ce créneau scientifique.
