Abstract

Chamber-music societies have encouraged communities to form around musicians and concert series, while also reflecting significant societal change. This chapter thinks about the people involved in making chamber music, at home or in the salon, as amateurs and as professionals. Friendships and romantic relationships could be fostered by making chamber music together. On a more public stage, concert series encouraged chamber-music appreciation as a form of cultural uplift and education. Chamber-music societies have flourished outside of European capital cities, hosting visiting musicians and supporting local ensembles around the world. Some have supported political causes from women’s suffrage to civil rights.
