Social Work and the Physical Environment
Susan C MappAbstract
The impact of the physical environment on those served by social workers is becoming ever clearer, due not only to the climate crisis, but also air pollution, access to water, and the overuse of natural resources. Environmental justice is explained, together with its relationship to social work practice. Increasing knowledge on the detrimental effects of bottled water—on individuals as well as the environment—is discussed. The varied impacts of the climate crisis on the natural world and on physical health, as well as mental health, are explained, with particular focus on more vulnerable groups such as children, women, and Indigenous persons. Sustainable development approaches are discussed, and the UN treaties to address the worsening crisis are explained. The Country Profile explores the situation in Bolivia and that nation’s response.
