Objectives:

This study aims to demonstrate a step-by-step technique to capture high-quality retinal fundus images using a smartphone paired with a +20D convex lens. Developing proficiency in this method enables ophthalmologists to efficiently document retinal conditions and facilitate knowledge sharing without requiring conventional fundus cameras.

Material and Methods:

After obtaining informed consent, pupillary dilation is achieved using 2.5% phenylephrine and 1% tropicamide eye drops. The smartphone camera is set to video mode with the flashlight activated, and magnification is increased up to ×3. The +20D lens is held approximately 5 cm from the patient’s eye using the thumb and index finger, while the smartphone camera is positioned about 30 cm from the lens. The light is directed through the lens onto the retina as video recording continues. This technique has been applied to 27 patients so far.

Results:

The retinal images captured with this smartphone method demonstrate quality comparable to those obtained with standard fundus cameras.

Conclusion:

Capturing effective retinal images using a smartphone requires experience, adequate pupil dilation, clear ocular media, and patient cooperation. Smartphone fundus photography presents a straightforward and cost-effective approach for retinal imaging and documentation.
