Smarter Smiles in Dentistry
Farsana Thuruthiyil Nazir, Manu JohnsAbstract
Smart prosthodontics represents the integration of digital and intelligent technologies to enhance oral rehabilitation. Advances such as artificial intelligence (AI), computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing systems, three-dimensional printing, nanotechnology and smart biomaterials are transforming the precision, efficiency and personalisation of prosthodontic care. These innovations enable accurate digital diagnostics, faster workflows, improved patient comfort and restorations with superior biological and mechanical properties. Smart sensors and AI-driven predictive tools further support long-term monitoring and prognosis. Despite the challenges of cost, training and clinical adaptation, smart prosthodontics holds immense potential to improve treatment outcomes and redefine the future of dental practice. This review article highlights the current developments, clinical applications and future directions of smart technologies in prosthodontics, emphasising their role in delivering patient-centred, efficient and sustainable oral health care.
