Short and Practical Synthesis of Thioalkyl Muconic Acid Derivatives through the Reaction of 2-Methoxyfuran and Dithio- esters and amides

Dithioesters and dithioamides constitute versatile building blocks to access structurally diverse compounds. Herein, we present a short and practical strategy for the synthesis of both diester- and mixed ester–amide-conjugated diene derivatives through the reaction of 2-methoxyfuran with dithioesters and dithioamides. Computational studies support a mechanism involving two kinetically viable pathways to generate an intermediate thiirane en route to the products.
