Shared Scriptures, Shared Questions: Jewish Readings of the Christian Testament

Adele Reinhartz

This article experiments with an empathetic reading strategy that focuses on the emotions, motivations, and concerns of the characters, including Jesus, within the Gospel narratives. It argues that this approach allows readers to relate more personally to these figures. It concludes that an empathetic reading can enrich our understanding of the human element in New Testament Christology, and provide a medium through which Christians and Jews might understand one another better.
