Shaping a Just Future: Environmental Justice, Inclusion, and the Impact of Artificial Intelligence

Michàlle E. Mor Barak

Abstract

This paper offers an innovative perspective on inclusion by positioning it at the heart of environmental justice and climate action, emphasizing how artificial intelligence (AI) can serve as both a catalyst and a challenge in fostering a more equitable future. Unlike traditional approaches, the study highlights AI’s potential not only to improve environmental outcomes but also to address systemic social inequalities through inclusive data-driven strategies. The article introduces the concept of “inclusive AI,” which proactively mitigates algorithmic bias and ensures marginalized communities are central to climate solutions—transforming inclusion from a mere moral ideal to a practical, technological imperative. By proposing novel policies that embed environmental justice into corporate social responsibility, the paper underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration aimed at democratizing access to AI tools for climate mitigation. It also explores the ethical dimensions of AI development, advocating for innovations that prioritize equity and prevent societal marginalization. Importantly, the paper reframes inclusion as both a societal goal and a strategic driver for sustainable progress, emphasizing that technological advancements, if intentionally designed with justice in mind, can catalyze a more just climate future for all. This fresh outlook encourages stakeholders to leverage AI’s transformative potential for systemic equity and environmental sustainability.
