Sessile analogs of spherical bubbles

Claudiu Patrascu, Andra-Eleonora Radan, Victoria-Elena Plopeanu

The Letter concerns the shape of spherical bubbles and their transition to sessile analogs on planar surfaces. A theoretical model is proposed, predicting the resting bubble's radius as a function of the initial bubble radius, which agrees well with the experimental data. We found a 26% increase in the characteristic radius for the transformation of a spherical bubble into a sessile counterpart on hydrophilic surfaces for soap bubbles and on hydrophobic surfaces for air bubbles in water. The model also highlights under which conditions significant deviations from the 26%—law can be expected for the transition to sessile analogs.
