Semiotic aspects of the functioning of the preposition "in" in the English language
Polina Denisovna Kuzmina, Olga Vladimirovna PopkovaThe subject of the study is the functioning of the preposition "in" in the English language. The object of research is the preposition "in" as a linguistic sign that participates in the formation of spatial, temporal, abstract, and discursive meanings. The focus is on the specificity of the realization of the semantic potential of this unit in various types of contexts, as well as its role in the processes of linguistic representation of the surrounding reality. The main directions of the development of the meaning of the preposition "in," their interconnections, and dependence on cognitive mechanisms of understanding space, time, and other conceptual spheres are examined. Cases of the preposition's usage in denoting spatial relationships, temporal characteristics, emotional states, social connections, and ways of performing actions are analyzed. The research allows the identification of patterns in the functioning of the preposition "in" as one of the most frequent and semantically rich elements of the English language, as well as its role in reflecting the peculiarities of the linguistic worldview of English speakers. The study is based on a comprehensive application of semantic, contextual, and cognitive-semiotic analysis methods. The analysis is conducted using English language material with examples demonstrating the peculiarities of the usage of the preposition "in" in communicative situations. The scientific novelty of the research is defined by addressing the preposition "in" as an independent object of semiotic analysis. Unlike the traditional approach, which primarily considers this linguistic unit as a means of expressing grammatical relationships, the preposition is analyzed as an element of the language's sign system involved in the processes of conceptualizing space, time, and abstract categories. The analysis conducted allows for viewing the numerous cases of the preposition's usage not as a collection of disparate meanings but as a unified semantic system organized around the notion of an object's presence within certain boundaries. This cognitive model underlies the spatial, temporal, abstract, and discursive meanings of the preposition. The examined material confirms that the high frequency of this unit in the English language is due not only to its grammatical functions but also to its ability to serve as a means of linguistic representation of various spheres of human experience.
