Seed predation by reintroduced agoutis reduces seed survival of exotic invasive jackfruit tree

Rafael Moura, Pedro Mittelman, Alexandra Pires

Abstract

We assessed the interaction between reintroduced agoutis ( Dasyprocta leporina ) and seeds of the invasive jackfruit in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. In areas with agoutis, seed survival was 93% lower due to predation. Results highlight trophic rewilding as a complementary strategy to mitigate the impacts of biological invasions in novel ecosystems.
