Seed conditioning—Seedborne disease and treatment

Global movement of seed plays a critical role in agriculture, but it also presents a significant pathway risk for the introduction and spread of seedborne pathogens and pests. Commonly exported seeds are corn, vegetables, grass and forage, pulse, and soybean. These and many more seed types are moved globally, often several times before being sold commercially. With the seeds, the potential for new diseases to enter and establish in major crops is substantial. This lesson provides an overview of seedborne pathogens, including how they infect seeds and the dangers they pose to agricultural systems and trade. Through text, videos, and engaging activities, learners will explore optimal storage methods and conditions, seed conditioning practices that mitigate disease movement, and essential pre‐ and post‐harvest treatments that prevent seedborne pathogens and insect damage. Together, these concepts will help equip learners with foundational knowledge for safer seed handling and protect global agriculture.
