Securing Europe’s food system: Innovation, resilience and the common agricultural policy
Thia HennessyThis article examines the competitiveness and resilience of the EU agri-food sector amid growing geopolitical, environmental and economic pressures. Using the Draghi framework, it evaluates the sector’s performance across innovation, decarbonisation and strategic autonomy. While the EU remains a leading agri-food exporter, productivity growth has slowed, and dependence on imported inputs increases vulnerability to external shocks. The article highlights the rising importance of food security and identifies key investment priorities for the post-2027 common agricultural policy, including digital innovation, climate-smart practices and reduced input dependency, in order to strengthen long-term competitiveness and resilience.
