Secondary amenorrhoea: assessment and management in general practice

Secondary amenorrhoea is a common presentation in primary care and can be an early indicator of underlying reproductive, endocrine or lifestyle-related pathology. It is defined as the absence of menstruation for 3 months in women with previous regular cycles or 6 months in those with irregular cycles. Secondary amenorrhoea is often encountered by practice nurses during consultations for contraception, fertility, chronic disease reviews and cervical screening. This article presents an evidence-based approach to the assessment and management of secondary amenorrhoea in general practice, highlighting the role of practice nurses in early identification, health education and support for women living with the condition.
