Scientific output collaboration patterns, and thematic evolution in limb amputation research: A bibliometric study of SAARC-affiliated authors

This study systematically evaluated the scientific output, collaboration patterns, and thematic development of limb amputation (LA) research contributed by authors from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries over time.
Methodology:
A literature search was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Embase, and the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics database for English-language publications (1967–2024) on LA with at least one author affiliated with a SAARC country. After screening, bibliographic data were analyzed using Biblioshiny (Bibliometrix R package) to generate descriptive and science-mapping indicators of publications, authors, journals, countries, citations, and keywords.
Results:
A total of 1,168 eligible publications were identified. Scientific output increased steadily each year, with a notable rise after 2000. India was the leading contributor, followed by Pakistan and Nepal. Thematic mapping identified three main research domains: surgical and prosthetic management, vascular and traumatic causes, and diabetic foot and rehabilitation. Collaboration networks showed a core group of highly productive regional authors with growing international partnerships.
Conclusion:
LA research in SAARC countries has shifted from trauma-focused studies to diabetes-related care, prosthetics, and rehabilitation, reflecting a maturing and more collaborative research environment. Enhancing intra-regional collaboration could further boost research impact and practical applications.
