Science and Scientists in Modern Greece

Kostas Tampakis

Abstract

This chapter examines the history of the emergence of the community of natural scientists in Greece. The discussion spans the period from the first decades of the nineteenth century to the second half of the twentieth century. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between the history of science in Greece and the political and sociocultural developments of each period. The chapter examines the institutions of scientific practice, the narratives Greek scientists constructed to establish and defend their scientific and vocational expertise, and the ways that science impacted Greek intellectual and political life. Finally, the chapter addresses the periods and themes where more historical work is needed.
