Scenario validation for skills training through urinary catheterisation simulation in neonates: a methodological study

Introduction:

Simulation-based training supports the development of technical and non-technical nursing skills, promoting safe learning for complex neonatal procedures.

Aim:

To validate a simulation-based scenario for skills training in indwelling urinary catheterisation in male neonates.

Method:

A methodological study conducted between May 2023 and February 2024, structured into five stages: overview, scenario development, scenario progression design, debriefing and assessment. Content validation was performed by 11 experts, and a pilot test was carried out with six nursing students. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Content Validation Index (CVI).

Results:

The scenario and verification checklist showed excellent content validity, with CVI values exceeding 0.90 for all items. Sixty suggested revisions resulted in improvements, including adjustment of briefing and debriefing time, inclusion of laboratory tests and neonatal pain indicators, simulation in pairs and removal of non-recommended procedural steps. In the pilot test, students demonstrated increased learning outcomes, with theoretical knowledge improving by 15.0% and practical skills by 22.5% after participating in the simulation.

Conclusions:

The scenario was validated and demonstrated applicability as an educational tool for developing skills in neonatal indwelling urinary catheterisation, supporting safer and more standardised nursing practice.
