Same Same, but Different: A Glossary of Carcino‐Entomology as a Basis for an Improved Communication and for a Modern View of Carcinology Encompassing Entomology

ABSTRACT

One core aspect of science is communication, both among researchers as well as with the public. For successful communication, it is crucial that the terminology used is clear to avoid misunderstandings. Especially when researchers working on different groups of organisms communicate, they often use different terms for similar morphological structures, or they use the same terms for different structures or apply them in a different way. These differences cause problems, especially for comparative studies between groups of organisms. When closely related groups are compared, their representatives share a common evolutionary history and hence also their morphological structures are comparable and should receive the same terminology. We discuss here a possible terminology for the representatives of the group Insecta as part of the groups Crustacea sensu lato and Eucrustacea (‘insects are crustaceans’). In this way, we hope to improve communication between entomologists and carcinologists and moreover to contribute to a modern entomology within an evolutionary framework.
