Rural Landscape Planning in the Context of Climate Change: Integrated Approaches to Sustainable Land Use

Demet Demiroğlu

Climate change is reshaping the ecological structure, natural resources, and land-use patterns of rural landscapes, highlighting the need for sustainable planning approaches. This chapter examines the role of rural landscape planning in climate change adaptation and proposes an integrated framework for sustainable land use. Based on descriptive analysis and conceptual synthesis of national and international literature, the review considers ecosystem services, multifunctionality, resilience, nature-based solutions, sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, and ecological restoration. It also examines the contribution of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and climate risk assessments to planning decisions. Building on these perspectives, the chapter proposes a framework that connects ecological processes, land-use priorities, and socioeconomic needs through six stages: landscape assessment, climate risk analysis, spatial prioritization, adaptation strategy development, implementation, and adaptive monitoring. This integrated approach offers a conceptual basis for strengthening rural landscape resilience and supporting sustainable natural resource management under changing climatic conditions.
