Role of unani medicine in the management of oral diseases

A major global health concern that has a substantial impact on people’s quality of life is oral illnesses. In addition to the traditional oral hygiene materials such as toothpaste and toothbrushes, there is a growing trend in the usage of additional equipment and materials these days. In recent years, herbal-based phytochemicals have been more popular in the field of oral health care. This review aims to comprehensively review and compile all the information available on oral disease management in Unani medicine and its scientific appraisal. Literature reviews were conducted utilizing online databases such as Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed. The terms “oral diseases,” “periodontal diseases,” “management of oral diseases,” and “Unani medicine or herbal drugs or plants in management of oral diseases” were used in the search. This review reviewed all of the available English-language material. In Unani medicine, oral diseases have been discussed comprehensively, and numerous single and compound drugs are used for the management of oral diseases in various dosage forms. Many single drugs have been studied for their use in oral diseases and have shown their efficacy. A comprehensive analysis showed that Unani scholars have claimed that Unani drugs are effective in the management of oral diseases. Some of the studies have also proven its effect. Moreover, to verify this claim, further thorough research is needed.
