Abstract

Since its first description nearly half a century ago, proctocolectomy with ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA) has revolutionized the way we surgically treat patients with ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis, without the need of a permanent ostomy. The procedure has ever since undergone significant modifications and refinements, eventually aligning with the advancements and associated benefits of minimally invasive surgery. This study offers a timely overview of the progress made in IPAA, showcasing the different approaches and discussing their outcomes in depth.
