Role of Magnets in Prosthodontics – A Review

Gaurav Gupta, Shaveta Bansal, Mehul Dhawan

Magnets are widely used in prosthodontics because of their retentive ability, ease of use, and patient comfort. The development of rare earth magnets has expanded their applications in overdentures, implant-supported prostheses, sectional dentures, and maxillofacial rehabilitation. Magnetic systems provide passive retention with minimal lateral stress on supporting structures and are especially useful in compromised clinical situations. However, corrosion and loss of magnetic strength remain important limitations. This review discusses the history, classification, applications, biological considerations, advantages, limitations, and recent advances of magnets in prosthodontics.
