Role of internalization in exploring the impacts of media images on students

This study examined the moderating role of internalization in the relationship between media image exposure and these outcomes among Pakistani college students. Methods: A mixed factorial pretest-posttest experimental design was used. Participants were 150 college students (75 male, 75 females; ages 18-25; average BMI), selected via purposive sampling and randomly assigned to one of three conditions: exposure to idealized models (thin female/muscular male images), exposure to average-size models, or no exposure (control). State self-esteem, body esteem, body-focused anxiety, and internalization were measured before and after the manipulation using the State Self-Esteem Scale, Body Esteem Scale, Physical Appearance State and Trait Anxiety Scale, and Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4. Results: Internalization significantly moderated the media exposure-self-esteem relationship, with lower internalization linked to higher self-esteem after idealized exposure. Thin ideal internalization moderated this relationship similarly, with low-to-medium levels supporting self-esteem and high levels producing no effect. Family pressure moderated both the media-self-esteem and media-anxiety relationships, with low pressure buffering against declines. Media pressure moderated the media-body esteem relationship, with high pressure predicting lower body esteem. Discussion: Even brief (15-minute) exposure to idealized images harms self-esteem and body esteem among Pakistani college students, with internalization, particularly family pressure, serving as a key, culturally specific moderating mechanism, informing media literacy and counseling interventions.
