Robots for surveillance, security and public safety

Rob Bogue

Purpose

This paper aims to provide details of the robots used in surveillance, security and public safety applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Following a short introduction, this first considers the use of drones for military surveillance. It then discusses robots for site security, which is followed by details of the role of robots in public safety. Finally, conclusions are drawn.

Findings

The military makes extensive use of drones, which vary greatly in design and capabilities. They play a critical role in intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance missions. Drones are also used for site security monitoring where they augment or act as alternatives to fixed cameras and foot or vehicle patrols. Mobile ground robots perform similar tasks and are frequently used alongside drones. Most are four-wheeled platforms, but quadrupedal robots are also used to enhance perimeter and site security. Law enforcement agencies are making growing use of public-area surveillance robots for assistance and to enhance their capabilities and include drones and wheeled and quadrupedal robots. They are increasingly being deployed in the Far East. Major uses are detecting low-level crime and antisocial behaviour. Humanoids are now being deployed in China to assist with routine law enforcement and road traffic management.

Originality/value

This provides a detailed insight into the growing role played by robots in surveillance, security and public safety.
