Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment secondary to contact sport: A case series and systematic review
James Pietris, Surbhi Agrawal, Wilson Wong, Weng Onn ChanTwo cases of Australian Rules Football (AFL)-related rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) are reported. A 31-year-old male athlete presented with a right superonasal macula-on RRD with three associated retinal tears anteriorly at the ora. He underwent pneumatic retinopexy and cryopexy. A 25-year-old male athlete presented with a right superior macula-splitting retinal detachment. He was successfully treated with pneumatic retinopexy and laser retinopexy. There is evidence to support protective eyewear to prevent ocular trauma in sports. Careful consideration must be given to the financial, social, and psychological morbidity such advice is likely to impart on professional athletes and their families.
