Revolutionising Construction with Drones: A Comprehensive Review of Applications and Challenges

Drones are changing the construction industry by improving site surveying, tracking progress, and collecting data. This review looks at important drone uses in construction, such as facade inspection, progress monitoring, and multi-sensor integration like GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The benefits include better accuracy, fewer delays, and cost savings. Still, there are challenges with managing data, calibrating sensors, dealing with software issues, and the skill gaps in processing data from drones. Regulations from DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation, India) and FAA (Federal Aviation Administration, USA) also affect how drones are used. The review discusses limitations like battery life, performance in urban areas, weather effects, and unexpected costs. Research shows that using drones can reduce rework by up to 35%. Drones provide valuable improvements, but they need skilled implementation and awareness of the context. Future research should focus on improving data processing, harmonising regulations, and evaluating costs and benefits.
