Review of Organizational Identity Research

Shinta Ratnawati, Dewi Purnama Sari, Miftachul Mujib, Dewi Anggraeni

This study reviews the development of organizational identity (OI) research within organizational behavior by combining bibliometric mapping with interpretive content analysis. Using a hybrid review design, 162 Scopus-indexed articles published between 1985 and 2025 were retrieved through Publish or Perish and analyzed using VOSviewer to identify thematic clusters. The input–process–output (IPO) framework was then applied to organize the literature and derive future research directions. The findings show that OI research has expanded markedly over the past decade and is structured around four main themes: critical OI success factors, the organizational engagement process, OI operational support, and OI as an organizational resource. The literature is concentrated largely in Western contexts and at the individual level of analysis, with survey and empirical grounded-theory approaches being the most frequently used designs. Based on this synthesis, the study proposes an IPO-based agenda centered on antecedents, processes, and consequences of OI. By integrating bibliometric evidence with interpretive analysis, this review consolidates fragmented knowledge and provides a clearer foundation for future OI research.
