Review of Multimodality Imaging in Ovarian Torsion: Case Series
Malathy Krishnamoorthy, Subhalakshmi Kumaran, Madhu Sowmitha Pachipala, Aishwarya Veeraraghavan, Kalaivani P.Ovarian cysts and adnexal masses are common causes of acute abdominal pain in females, with presentations ranging from incidental findings to surgical emergencies like ovarian torsion. Timely diagnosis through imaging is essential for appropriate management and to prevent disastrous outcome. This case series presents three female patients (ages 13–44) with acute abdominal pain who underwent multimodality imaging—ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography—which revealed various ovarian pathologies like mature cystic teratoma, endometriotic cyst, paraovarian cyst, and a serous borderline tumor. These patients presented with acute abdominal pain and were diagnosed as ovarian torsion on imaging, which were reconfirmed intraoperatively. Surgical interventions included salpingo-oophorectomy, cystectomy, and oophoropexy. Imaging findings were consistent with histopathology in all cases. This series highlights the varied presentations of ovarian lesions, the importance of imaging in emergency settings, and guiding towards early surgical intervention in cases of torsion to preserve ovarian function and prevent gangrene.
