Review article: Benevolence in International Relations
Ariel ColonomosThis article examines the moral, aesthetic, and epistemic ambitions of Ramel’s Benevolence in International Relations. It explores the author’s posture as a ‘benevolent spectator’, asking whether sensitivity and moral subtlety can deepen our understanding of world politics. Particular attention is given to solidarity across geographical, social, and temporal distances and to the role of language in communicating benevolence as both an idea and a disposition. The article also considers what benevolence might require of academic communities. Can it sustain dialogue and resist the brutalisation of intellectual life while preserving the disagreement, discomfort and critical independence essential to academic freedom?
