Rethinking consumption through consciousness

Olivia Petit, Carlos Velasco

Abstract

This chapter synthesizes the interdisciplinary insights developed throughout the book to propose a renewed understanding of consumer consciousness as central to contemporary consumption. Moving beyond traditional views of consumption as mere transaction or preference, this chapter frames consumer consciousness as a dynamic, embodied, and relational process shaped by multisensory experience, social context, and emerging technologies. It highlights how conscious consumption aligns consumer choices with deeper values, supporting well-being, ethical reflection, and ecological responsibility. The chapter revisits key themes: phenomenology, multisensory perception, immersive technology, and ethical challenges, integrating them into a unified framework that positions consciousness not only as a medium for sensing value but also as a site for designing meaningful experiences. It emphasizes the evolving role of consciousness amid digital mediation, avatars, AI, and predictive systems, which expand the consumer’s lived experience beyond physical boundaries. Ultimately, the chapter calls for a normative project that aligns markets and technologies with human dignity and planetary health, recognizing consciousness itself as the future of consumption. The conscioumer emerges as a figure whose multisensory, contextual awareness is integral to both individual well-being and the collective futures of society and environment.
