Abstract

We present the case of a 14-year-old girl diagnosed with Anti-N-Methyl-D-aspartate Receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis following the onset of acute seizures associated with dysautonomia and hallucinations, successfully treated after a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy and immunotherapy. Histology of the ovarian cyst confirmed the diagnosis of an ovarian teratoma with neural tissues. She then underwent neurorehabilitation and had full recovery of her neurological and functional status. This case highlights the importance of multidisciplinary care in an adolescent with a complex medical condition and raises the awareness of the association of ovarian teratomas with NMDAR encephalitis. We also discuss the considerations surrounding the nature and approach of surgery based on patient factors, surgical resectability, and surgical expertise.
