The Geiger–Müller (GM) counter is widely used in γ dose rate measurement, but its long dead time limits its range. To extend the upper limit of the GM counter’s range and expand its application scope, this paper validates the Time-to-Count method with a J306 gamma GM counter. The hardware and software structure of the radiation measurement system is designed according to the basic principle of measuring radiation intensity, using the Time-to-Count method. Experiments show that the Time-to-Count method has higher linearity than the traditional pulse-counting method, and the upper limit of the range is extended by two orders of magnitude.
