Repeat Bone Graft Harvest From Single Iliac Crest Donor Site in Cleft Patients: A Review of Surgical Technique and Outcomes

Jing Qin Tay, David Schramm, Jennifer M. Brown, Matthew Langford, Guy Thorburn, Marc C. Swan

Background

Cleft patients may require multiple bone grafting procedures that traditionally necessitate alternating donor sites with cumulative morbidity.

Solution

Re-harvesting from the same iliac crest donor site after an adequate regeneration interval.

What we did that is new

We demonstrate a cortical lid and periosteum preservation technique with 14 successful re-harvesting procedures, showing a 100% successful graft integration rate with Kindelan Score 1 or 2 at 6-month follow-up with no long-term donor or recipient site complications.
