Relationship between Idiopathic Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Anthropometric Measurements of the Hand and Wrist

Introduction:

This study aims to investigate the association between anthropometric measurements, wrist and hand indices, and idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (ICTS) development.

Methods:

The study included 55 patients (45 females and 10 males, aged 18–65) who were diagnosed with ICTS who complained of hand pain and numbness. A control group of 55 healthy volunteers, matched for age and sex, who did not have CTS symptoms, were also included. The body height, weight, epicondyle circumference, forearm circumference, wrist circumference, wrist depth, wrist width, hand length, palm length (PL), palm width, and third digit length (TDL) were measured. Based on these data, body mass index and several indices, including wrist ratio (WR), hand ratio (HR), wrist–palm ratio, shape index (SI), digit index, wrist–palm index, and wrist cross-sectional area (WA), were calculated.

Results:

Compared with the control group, the ICTS group exhibited a significant increase only in the mean values of the PL and TDL anthropometric values and in the mean values of the WR, HR, and SI indices.

Conclusion:

Our results indicate that WR, HR, and SI index values from anthropometric measurements offer moderate utility in identifying individuals at heightened ICTS risk.
