Reimagining Assessment for Multilingual Clients

Mariam Abdelaziz, Leslie Johnson, Kellyn Hall

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools show promise in supporting speech-language pathologists in providing culturally responsive evaluation and intervention for multilingual populations. However, many clinicians report uncertainty regarding how to integrate AI into clinical practice in ways that enhance, rather than compromise, culturally and linguistically responsive service delivery. This uncertainty highlights the need for clear, evidence-informed guidance on the ethical and effective use of AI with multilingual clients. This tutorial presents a practical, step-by-step training framework designed to prepare both monolingual and multilingual clinicians, instructors, and clinical educators to use AI in culturally responsive ways. Grounded in Culturally Responsive Evaluation, the framework positions AI as a tool to support clinical preparation and hypothesis generation while maintaining clinician interpretive authority. The tutorial includes guided AI applications across key components of multilingual assessment, including case history development, dynamic assessment planning, hypothesis generation, and language sample support. To support implementation, the tutorial provides example AI prompts, structured applications within least-biased assessment approaches, and a case-based illustration demonstrating how AI can be used to support organization and analysis without replacing clinical judgment.
