Abstract

‘La Plata FA’(Reg. No. CV‐392 PI 709417) and ‘Los Hornos FA’ (Reg. No. CV‐393 PI 709418) are dual‐purpose, late maturing oat ( Avena sativa L.) cultivars developed and released by the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, National University of La Plata, Argentina. La Plata FA was registered as No. 17284 by the National Institute of Seeds, Argentina, and Los Hornos as No. 17285, both in 2019. Experiments were conducted in several environments. La Plata FA and Los Hornos FA were primarily registered for their adult plant resistance to crown rust. They also showed early‐season forage potential and resistance to lodging compared with the control oat cultivars, along with favorable characteristics, including resistance to stem rust and Drechslera leaf blight [caused by Drechslera avenae (Eidam) Scharif]. La Plata FA also exhibited high test weight and grain protein concentration. These novel cultivars demonstrated considerable grain yield in both dual‐purpose and grain yield experiments with values that were either superior or comparable to those of the control genotypes. Additional information on the predominant Puccinia coronata f. sp. avenae P. Syd & Syd and P. graminis f. sp. avenae races, as well as the behavior of the new Argentinian cultivars as seedlings, is presented.
