Registration of ‘GEORGIA‐25NV’ peanut

Abstract

‘Georgia‐25NV’ (Reg. No. CV‐162, PI 709647) is a new high‐yielding, high‐oleic, Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV)–resistant, and root‐knot nematode [RKN; Meloidogyne arenaria (Neal) Chitwood]–resistant, large‐seeded, runner‐type peanut ( Arachis hypogaea L. ssp. hypogaea var. hypogaea ) cultivar that was released by the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station in 2025. It was developed at the University of Georgia, Tifton Campus. Georgia‐25NV originated from a cross between two advanced Georgia breeding lines: GA 082524 × GA 032517. GA 082524 is a high‐oleic, RKN‐resistant, Georgia breeding line derived from the cross of ‘Georgia‐02C’ × an F 4 selection from ‘Georgia‐01R’ × ‘COAN’. GA 032517 is also an RKN‐resistant, advanced Georgia breeding line derived from the same cross combination of Georgia‐01R × COAN. Pedigree selection was practiced within the early segregating generations. Performance testing began in the F 4:6 generation with the advanced pure‐line selection, GA 183129. During 2022–2024 (3 years) and 2023–2024 (2 years) and averaged over 12 and 8 multilocation tests without nematode pressure in Georgia, Georgia‐25NV had similar yield and dollar value but significantly greater percentages of total sound mature kernel (TSMK) grade and meat content, respectively, compared with ‘TifNV‐HG’. However, Georgia‐25NV was also found to have significantly higher yield than several other RKN‐resistant genotypes, including TifNV‐HG, when grown in highly infected RKN field tests. Georgia‐25NV combines high yield, high TSMK grade, TSWV resistance, RKN resistance, large seed size, and the high‐oleic trait for longer shelf life and improved oil quality of peanut and peanut products.
