Reduction in the Incidence of Clostridioides difficile Infection in the Intensive Care Unit of a Tertiary Care Hospital through Targeted Infection Prevention and Control Strategies

Abstract

Context:

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a major cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and colitis in hospitalized patients.

Aims:

This study aimed to report changes in the incidence rate of CDI and review infection prevention and control strategies.

Settings and Design:

This retrospective study was conducted between 2018 and 2024 in a tertiary care hospital in Mumbai, India.

Subjects and Methods:

Patients with suspected CDI were first tested with by polymerase chain reaction; if positive, then for CDAB toxin.

Statistical Analysis Used:

Data was summarized as percentages and incidence rates per 1000 patient days.

Results:

A total of 135 patients developed CDI, with an average incidence of 0.6/1000 patient days. The crude mortality rate was 16%.

Conclusions:

Addressing the key gaps of inadequate cleaning, incorrect disinfectant dilution, and improper duster usage helped achieving reduction in the incidence of CDI.
