Recurrent hydronephrosis and catheter blockage, secondary to an organised bacterial mass within the bladder

Simon McGurk, Alin Carter, Joseph Robinson, Ruth Doherty

We present a frail man in his 80s with a medical history of hypertension, oesophageal cancer (2018), chronic kidney disease stage 3, hiatus hernia and a long-term catheter. He was admitted with urosepsis and repeated catheter blockages. Imaging confirmed bilateral hydronephrosis secondary to a large gas-containing bladder mass. Operative removal of the amorphous mass was performed and microbiological analysis revealed the presence of microorganisms consistent with Proteus and Aerococcus . Our patient has recovered well and has been discharged back to residential care. We have found a few similar reported cases.
