Recovery of Glucose from Aqueous Solutions by Adsorption on Green Carbon

M. Mini Margaret

Lignocellulosic wastes and agricultural waste materials contain multiple sugars. Large quantities of lignocellulosic wastes generated from agricultural residues and agro-industrial practices generally pollute the environment. This environmental waste can be minimised by converting it into valuable products. The aim of this study is to work towards environmentally friendly solutions by transforming lignocellulosic waste into valuable material, which improves and upgrades technology for waste management and minimisation. Eco-friendly and economical adsorbents are desirable for removing pollutants from the environment. The production of natural adsorbents involves the use of waste from agricultural products, which makes them cost-effective and eco-friendly. In the present study, glucose was adsorbed on Prosopis juliflora green carbon (PJGC) and desorbed in water and ethanol. This method can be suggested to fractionate glucose from lignocellulosic wastes. The adsorbent was characterised by FT-IR and BET surface area studies. The maximum adsorption of glucose on PJGC was analysed by adsorption studies in relation to contact time, pH, temperature, concentration and adsorbent dosage. The stability of glucose on PJGC was determined by desorption studies using water and ethanol.
