Reconstruction of a large congenital upper eyelid coloboma in a newborn using a Tenzel flap: Case report and literature review
Ismail Murat Seyhun, Nurettin Bayram, Kenan SonmezEyelid colobomas are rare congenital full-thickness defects that may present as isolated anomalies or as part of systemic syndromes. Early surgical repair of significant defects is crucial to prevent corneal exposure and vision loss. Large upper eyelid colobomas are commonly treated with grafts such as bilamellar or tarsomarginal grafts, or acellular dermal allografts. We report a 17-day-old girl with a large central right upper eyelid coloboma measuring 14.3 mm horizontally and 6.5 mm vertically who underwent successful repair with a Tenzel semicircular flap. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred. Only minimal paracentral notching was observed, and no reoperation was needed. The procedure provided excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes.
