Recent Progress in Sustainable Approaches for Biginelli Reaction: Synthesis of Dihydropyrmidinone Derivatives

Alka Singh, Trapti Aggarwal

An approach towards resilient chemistry and sustainable development for organic compounds has attracted the scientific community worldwide. The need for sustainability is the shift from destructive traditional methods to greener, more environmentally friendly strategies. The dihydropyrmidinones (DHPMs) derivates are widely synthesized by simple one-pot, multicomponent Biginelli reaction having widespread pharmacological and biological significance. The practical applicability of the dihydropyrmidinones in varied fields of biomedicine has led to a plethora of research on it. The conventional methods for carrying out Biginelli reaction involved the use of different toxic solvents causing negative and harmful impact on the environment. The problems in the conventional approach have attracted the researchers to emphasize on designing more sustainable and environment friendly approaches for Biginelli reaction. Presence of different catalyst in a solvent free environment has solved the problem of low yield, large reaction time, high reaction temperature and toxic solvents in comparison to the conventional methods. The present review focusses briefly on the literature survey from 2021 on the Biginelli reaction in presence of different greener catalytic system.
