Recent Advances in Catalysts for the Dehydrogenation of 1,4-Butanediol to γ-Butyrolactone

Yi Song, Zheng Zhang, Wenzheng Zhang, Kangjun Wang

γ-Butyrolactone (GBL), an important fine chemical, can be produced via the selective dehydrogenation of 1,4-Butanediol (BDO). Although some achievements have been gained, the development of robust catalysts with exceptional catalytic performance and long-term stability still presents significant challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a systematic summary and outlook. First, the review describes the two main reaction mechanisms for converting BDO to prepare GBL. Next, a systematic summary is conducted on various types of catalysts for vapor-phase dehydrogenation and oxidative dehydrogenation. Finally, further prospects of catalysts are given for the preparation of GBL from BDO. The review seeks to provide a valuable reference and guidance for innovative research on catalysts.
