Abstract

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) at the nanoscale is a 2D nanomaterial with distinct electrical characteristics, which makes it one of the active materials utilized in the fabrication of the supercapacitor electrode. However, the pristine 2D MoS 2 has limitations of electrical conductivity and stability issues. In this review, we emphasized the facile hydrothermal method to synthesize the 2D-MoS 2 -based nanomaterials as supercapacitor electrodes. Recently reported, the direct growth of binder-free MoS 2 based nanosheets is successfully deposited on carbon cloth using the hydrothermal method. The electrochemical performance of pure 2D MoS 2 and 2D MoS 2 -based nanomaterials with dopants such as metals, carbons, and polymers is correlated in terms of energy density, power density, specific capacitance, current density, and cyclic stability. One of the recent literature reports that Rb/2D MoS 2 exhibits a maximum specific capacitance of 3,300 F g −1 and stability due to doping the electroactive material between layers of MoS 2 nanosheets, enlarging ion storage space, and having more electron and ion accessibility, but the pristine 2H-MoS 2 exhibits only 255 F g −1 . Finally, this review discusses challenges encountered, such as large-scale production and obtaining a stable 1T MoS 2 phase. Due to this, further optimizing hydrothermal conditions, including reaction time and temperature, is required for future supercapacitor electrodes.
