Shopping centre allocations have declined over time in part due to uncertainty surrounding the property type triggered by the challenges associated with innovations and disruptions.

Research limitations/implications

Investors have under-allocated to the shopping centre industry due in part to a lack of understanding of market fundamentals and fear of underperformance.

Practical implications

Discussion of the behavioural nature of the real estate market and the resilience investments have demonstrated applying the stimulus-organism-response framework.

Social implications

Society would benefit from additional capital infusions to the shopping centre property class.
