Reading Women’s Bonds in Adrienne Rich’s Poems: A Feminist Poetic Study
Christiane Chehade, Lea El Yahchouchi Abi Chaker This study offers a feminist analysis of Adrienne Rich's poetry in her works The Will to Change: Poems 1968-1970 (1971), The Dream of a Common Language (1978), A Wild Patience Has Taken Me This Far: 1978-1981 (1981), and Dark Fields of the Republic: 1991-1995 (1995), focusing on six poems chosen because each stage is an encounter between women across the color line. The corpus is deliberately narrow so that close reading remains possible within the limits of a single article. The article argues that while Rich is conventionally read as a second-wave feminist writer speaking for White women, her poems construct a solidarity that reaches across the color line. The study therefore reconsiders the conventional labeling of Rich as a second-wave feminist and reads her instead as a poet who voiced concerns usually assigned to the third wave while writing from within the second. The findings are accordingly indicative rather than representative of Rich's poetry as a whole. Drawing on both second-wave and third-wave feminist theories, the study examines Rich's challenge to the estrangement between women and her articulation of a solidarity that does not depend on assuming a single, undifferentiated womanhood. The reading offers a fresh account of Rich's understanding of solidarity, particularly in relation to the third-wave concerns that are often overlooked in her poetry.
