Rare but Real: Strangulated Urethral Prolapse Presenting as Acute Genital Swelling

Abstract

Urethral prolapse is a very rare condition with a bimodal age distribution, most commonly occurring in prepubertal girls and postmenopausal women. Risk factors for the development of urethral prolapse are hypermobility of the urethra and mucosal atrophy of the urethra/vagina secondary to decreased estrogen. A 57-year-old postmenopausal female patient presented to the urology clinic with a complaint of a mass protruding through the urethra since 5 days, associated with a history of dysuria, urinary frequency, and urethral bleeding. Obstetric history included a single normal vaginal delivery. On examination, an irreducible urethral prolapse was noted with a bleeding urethral mucosa, with the urethral meatus in the center.
